Meningococcal disease is a serious illness caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. This bacteria can cause infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), as well as bacteremia, a severe blood infection. Without prompt intervention, meningococcal disease can lead to permanent neurological damage or even death.
